Portland – Gabby being very concerned about the imminent defeat of the Portland basketball team. Which is normal, she was born and raised here! She tells me about how open to queer people Portland is. So much so in fact that she suggests it even hindered her coming out. Indeed, when at 17 she told one of her older sisters about her first girl crush, the reaction wasn’t one of fear or disgust but of being totally cool, the sister telling her not to worry, everyone crushes on girls! The other disadvantages coming from such openness (we’re never happy, arent’ we?) include no need for a specific lesbian bar apparently (BS, I’m sure there’s a million gay bars), so good luck finding the lesbians on a Friday night, and a lack of a sense of community. She tells me there are meetups like Dyke Hikes though.
